Child and Youth Friendly Space Founded by UNICEF

Summary

Northern Iraq offensive has started on June 5, 2014, when the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS; sometimes referred to as ISIL and now The Islamic State -IS) and aligned Armed Opposition Groups (AOGs) began a major offensive and seized several cities and other territories. The group has waged a brutal campaign against the population while seizing large areas of territory in Iraq and Syria, aiming to establish a caliphate.
Because of IS taking over Mosul and other towns in surrounding provinces, some 1,800,000 people have been displaced throughout Iraq, including large numbers in Dohuk (520,445), Erbil (184,000) and Sulamaniyah (95,200)
Children have witnessed and experienced violence faced loss and has been uprooted from their homes. They carry with them physical and emotional scars of the conflict and now face new struggles as IDPs. The psychosocial effects of such horrific experiences are far-reaching, affecting their well-being, learning abilities and social skills. Continuing exposure to extreme violence, displacement and hardship are known to have immediate and long-term impacts on children?s psychosocial wellbeing.
The upsurge in violence is continuing to wear away children?s protective environments and having broader child protection consequences on larger proportions of the child population. Prior to the crisis, child protection services were not operating at an optimum level. The increase in the number of children exposed to protection violations is leaving the few services that do exist seriously overstretched. While services providers grapple to respond to the scale of protection concerns, socio-economic pressure, political/social unrest and an overwhelming sense of uncertainty is undermining the protective role of families and communities leaving children exposed to mounting risks.

- 2500 children have access to the established CFSs.
- 300 Children with special needs in the established CFSs are identified and referred to appropriate services.
- Raising awareness of 1500 individuals among the community regarding the children rights.
- Establishing 4 committees for volunteers to continue the project in the future.
- Coordination with the governmental specialized centres to make some visits to CFSs.

As a partner with UNICEF, a project about (CP) have been opened which is funded by UNICEF org. In this project, four Child Friendly Spaces (CFS) are being opened in four IDPS camps, which are located in Sharai idp camp, Kabarto 1, Kabarto 2 and Cham_Mishko Camp in Zakho.
